Aleksandra Mitrović residency report
Over the past few weeks, Szczecin has provided a backdrop for the artistic research and development of a new project by Serbian sound artist Aleksandra Mitrović.
During her residency, Aleksandra explored the city both on land and on the water, tracing its complex history through places connected with social protest, resistance, and collective action. Her research also brought her into contact with local activists and artists, whose perspectives became an important part of her exploration of the city and its surroundings.
As part of her residency, Aleksandra travelled across Western Pomerania, visiting places such as Nowa Szkoła in Kopice — an independent cultural space situated on the shores of Zalew Szczeciński (the Szczecin Lagoon). These encounters and shared explorations gradually shaped the development of her project “Before the Storm / Silence as an Act of Resistance.” The residency culminated in a final presentation in Alt Buchholz, a location chosen for its particular social and ecological significance. Beyond being one of Szczecin’s green areas, Alt Buchholz is also a site of an ongoing community struggle to protect its natural character. During the evening performance, the silence of political protest encountered the sounds of the forest, creating a space for listening, reflection, and presence.

Aleksandra Mitrović is a sound artist based in Germany. Her practice encompasses experimental sound, radio, and audiovisual storytelling. Through her work, she explores the social, poetic, and political dimensions of listening, silence, and presence.
