Open Call TRAFO Residencies 2025/26

The residency will be hosted by TRAFO Center for Contemporary Art in Szczecin, a contemporary art institution dedicated to supporting critical, cross-disciplinary practices.

This call is primarily intended for research-based projects, but we also welcome experimental, hybrid forms that bridge theory and practice.

🔧 What we offer:

A three-week stay in Szczecin in November 2025 or January 2026 Financial support that includes: Travel costs (domestic/international) Accommodation in Szczecin Daily expenses (per diem) Additional funds for short-term study trips (1–2 days) or archival research in other cities (e.g. Warsaw) Access to TRAFO’s curatorial team and local cultural networks A concluding public presentation (lecture, workshop, or concert) developed during the residency and presented at TRAFO


🔎 Who we are looking for:

We welcome applications from:

Researchers (independent or affiliated) in sound studies, ethnomusicology, cultural anthropology, media theory, political philosophy, or related disciplines Artists whose work engages with research-oriented, socially engaged, or critical sound practices Individuals or collectives exploring power, listening, infrastructure, memory, and resistance in relation to music and technology Projects involving or inspired by the Central and Eastern European context are particularly welcome, though this is not a requirement.

Sonic surveillance and sonic warfare Music and sound as social or political infrastructure Marginal sonic archives and forgotten voices Listening as resistance Post-industrial or post-digital soundscapes DIY technology and counter-hegemonic media Sonic ethnography and experimental methods

Short bio (max. 300 words) Project proposal (max. 500 words) – include your research interests, planned activities during the residency, and your preferred dates (November or January) Portfolio or sample of relevant work – up to 10 pages or links (can be academic, artistic, or hybrid) Selected applicants may be invited for a short online conversation before final decisions are made.
