Soumaya Phéline residency report
During her residency, Soumaya Phéline further deepened her practice of CDJ turntablism, with a particular focus on the performative dimension of DJing. By pushing the limits of CDJs and turntables (which often perceived as simple playback devices) she reveals their potential to reshape electronic music practices. Her DJ performances take on a cinematic quality, using sound storytelling to recompose, layer, and blend tracks into immersive narratives. This approach shifts her role from that of a selector to that of a performer who crafts unique, ephemeral sound experiences that invite conscious experimentation.
Her practice also critiques dominant music models that privilege originality over reinvention, recycling, and technical craft. During the residency, she sought to deepen this exploration through collaborations with sound artists and designers, beatboxers, DJs, and vocalists, pushing creative boundaries and fostering collective sound interactions. By documenting her process through sound, visuals, and writing, she aims to develop a sample bank and to trace the evolution of her research. Real-time sampling and manipulation form a central aspect of this work, allowing her to weave new narratives within live performances. Through this research, she explores unprecedented uses of tools as well as new forms of musical storytelling.
