Shortwave Collective is an international feminist artist group using the electromagnetic spectrum (largely radio) as artistic material. During their residency, they will look at the unique possibilities offered by citizen band (CB) radio: a range of frequencies allocated to radio amateurs that do not require a licence to broadcast on. The current use of CB radio by amateurs and enthusiasts is a rich territory to be explored as sonic material, to collect, compose with and share. Shortwave Collective hopes to use CB as an alternative channel to communicate from their locations across several countries, using analogue technologies, bypassing increasingly political and commercialised digital platforms. Their electromagnetic explorations will be translated into an audio work, sharing their practice-based inquiry in such a way to allow the poetics of the medium to sound out. The audio work will be textural, the grain of the voice emerging through radio static and a collage of transmissions from around the world.
