Shortwave Collective presents "No 'go-go girls (on the dancefloor)'"
Developed within the online residency curated by OUT.RA and Skaņu Mežs, this audio work tunes into Citizens Band (CB) radio, a licence-free spectrum imagined as open and communal, to question who gets heard.
Interested in the materiality of radio waves and their atmospheric drift, the collective explores CB’s promise of shared connection while confronting the gendered codes embedded in its slang and culture. No 'go-go girls (on the dancefloor)' rejects a derogatory CB code equating women with livestock, used to describe a truck hauling pigs or cows.
Working across dispersed locations, these efforts attempt to meet at a distance - across languages, geographies and weather conditions - proposing speculative possibilities for a future collective CB radio community.
Shortwave Collective wrote a companion text titled "Becoming Citizens of the 11 Metre Band", which you can read here.
