CTM 2026 workshop: Site in Sound
A2A Transmission workshop with: Mark Bain
Does location have a voice? Do the physical elements residing in a place which define its space and structure also imbue a sonic fingerprint which defines its location? Using earthquake detecting equipment and seismic sensor arrays, this workshop will investigate ideas regarding sound as it relates to the physical material make-up of a location.
Part of the idea for this workshop stems from a series of recordings made in hotel rooms, which were wired up late at night to hear the building sleeping. Subtle actions and interventions within and throughout this confined space could elucidate a kind of composition of action. Creaking floors, squeaking doors, radiator flows and toilet flushes, snoring neighbours and passionate lovers all adds to the mix.
With this sensitive »archisonic« system the group will wire up a chosen site near Morphine Raum with signal transducers, and think about what elements would be interesting to »tune« into. Attention will also be paid to the ambient impacts of the location, from pedestrians to automobile traffic.
An aspect of play will be encouraged as a collaborative project where participants can bring tools of action such as drumsticks, mallets, violin bows, hammers, chains etc… but also human action such as footsteps, hands, and voice can work just as well. Essentially turning the location and its architecture into a large vibrational instrument, the vibrations from these »archi-soundings« will be recorded via the transducers. Headphones will be provided so that all participants will be able to monitor the collective vibrational mix live as it is made.
Returning to Morphine Raum for the last part of the workshop, a six channel recording of about 20 minutes in duration will be discussed and mixed in the studio space.
Requirements:
This workshop is open to all, no prior knowledge is required. Please come prepared to perform collaboratively with others. Participants can bring actionable instruments (mallets, drumsticks, bows etc) if wished.
