Workshop report: hardware hacking and experimental electronics
Workshop hardware hacking and experimental electronics with Magno Caliman
This workshop started from the spirit of the Brazilian “gambiarra”, using any available material to solve a problem at hand. This being programmed obsolescence, participants of the workshop modifies commercial electronic devices exploring the practice of circuit bending, and altering the circuits of devices that in other circumstances would be obsolete and/or discarded.
Making use of simple alligator clips and batteries, they modified and hacked scrap speakers and motors, turning them into synthesizers, percussion instruments, and kinetic sculptures. In this way they learned, in practice, basic electronic concepts such as electrical conductivity and electromagnetism, and how they relate to audio and sound generation.
