Kinda Hassan residency report
Kinda Hassan is a Paris-based artist working primarily with video and sound, among other media. Her practice centers on creating immersive environments where audiences encounter dynamic spaces shaped by psychic and social tensions. In recent years, she has increasingly focused on sound as a medium that inherently expresses movement.
Alongside her individual practice, Hassan has contributed as a sound artist to numerous films and performances. Her work has been presented at a wide range of festivals and institutions, including the Cannes, Berlinale, Oberhausen, Jihlava, and Transmediale festivals, as well as at MUCEM, La Maréchalerie Art Center, Mumok, and Casa Árabe, among other venues across Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
Born in Beirut in 1984, she lived and worked there until 2013. She holds two MA degrees: one in Fine Arts from the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA, 2007), and another in Sound Design from the École Supérieure d’Art et de Design (ESAD-TALM) in Le Mans (2018). Since 2021, she has been enrolled in the electroacoustic music composition program at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental (CRD) in Pantin.
During her residency at TRAFO (October 10–November 1, 2024), Hassan continued developing instruments from her ongoing Autonomics series. This project explores sound automata through the lens of energy models in electroacoustic music. Her current research focuses on the sonic potential of an instrument based on a low B bass string activated by a custom electronic bow, allowing for microtonal pitch control. The instruments are developed in collaboration with hardware and software engineer Stock.
Hassan presented her practice in an Artist Talk, followed by a series of open workshops. The residency concluded with a live concert performance.
